ferrari, back to you. >> thank you. now there is a new challenge facing schoolteachers all across the country today as they face nervous and frightened students looking for reassurance and answers following friday's shooting. but how should we communicate with our children about it? san francisco's unified school district is one of many all across the bay acknowledging the difficulty educators and students have. mayor ed lee and the superintendent released a statement letting our schools know there will be counselors available today to help anyone deal with trauma and stress. the images of last friday's newtown school shooting throughout the country have also hit us here at home. a psychologist tells us younger children will have a hard time understanding. >> so for those children it's really important to try and limit their exposure to these events all the news coverage and to more importantly to reassure to them the safety of their environment. >> older children will have a

better understanding and will want to know more specifics. dr. berry says be western open them and stress that this is an isolated incident. president obama told mourners that parents, educators, law enforcement and mental health experts need to join forces to prevent tragedies like this in the future. gun control was a big issue in the early 1990s when congress enacted a 10-year ban on assault weapons. that ban expired in 2004. some democrats are calling for new gun control legislation and california senator dianne feinstein has a bill in the works. >> it will ban the sale, the transfers the importation, and pot session not retroactively but -- and the possession not retroactively but prospectively, and ban big clips, drums or strips of more than 10 bullets. >> but the national rifle association has opposed laws like that. and that's a big reason gun control has been a low key

issue in recent years. people attending religious services have been trying to make sense of the events in connecticut even as they pray for the victims. parishioners gathered at a st. mary's cathedral -- at st. mary's cathedral yesterday in san francisco. some of people are feeling anger and other emotions that lead them to question god. >> our faith is shaken occasionally but that's why it's so important to have a strong faith and to remain consistent in our faith in good times so that when difficult times such as these come about, we can fall back and rely on that faith. >> church leaders at st. mary's say there are no easy answers. they say above all, it's important simply to talk about it and for continuing coverage of this story you can visit our website, cbssf.com. there's developing news in san francisco. we first told you about it a few minutes ago. police confirm there's been a home invasion and robbery in the taraval neighborhood. cate caugiran says the family was tied up. >> reporter: we confirmed

details. we want to show you that police are still here on scene at the 1600 block of sloat avenue. now, sfpd just got off the phone with us. they said it happened at 3 a.m. they got a call about a home invasion. family says they were tied up. they are not sure what was taken at the time. we not victims were not injured. but they were robbed. again, we're not sure how much property was taken from the home or how many people were home at the time. again, police are still on scene and brian, want to make note that this is an ongoing investigation. officers are looking for three male suspects. that's all the information we are able to confirm. live in san francisco, cate caugiran, cbs 5. time now is 5:06. for another look at weather and traffic, we'll did to meteorologist lawrence karnow and we're talking -- -- we'll go to meteorologist lawrence karnow and we're talking about -- it's warm in here today! what's going on? >> if you are coming to our studio this morning, ladies and

gentlemen, you have no problems. >> nice and toesy. >> this is unusual. >> today is very, very warm. but it is very wet outside in spots today as we are seeing scattered showers this morning. heading out this morning, the roads are slick out there. be very careful. as we've seen very low-level moisture moving in. but bringing in lots of heavy drizzle, some light showers outside. taking you toward the east bay you can see some of that there near berkeley and also near oakland but it's scattered and that's what we're going to see throughout the morning hours and tapering off this afternoon the still it is a wet and breezy start to the day. some of those winds 17 miles per hour into fairfield. out over the bay skies mostly cloudy, continuing to see some of those light showers at this time. the temperatures aren't too bad. mainly into the 50s outside but we have our own reporter out there right now, elissa harrington out there in the storm. how's it look out there right now? >> reporter: well, good morning. it's been raining on and off throughout morning. right now it's drizzling but traffic is moving smoothly as drivers head over the bay bridge, although it is very soggy out there.

now, here's some video taken from last night and early this morning. people are of course breaking out the umbrellas and rain jackets. these showers will continue through the morning but should clear up by the afternoon. conditions on the bay bridge are wet with some large puddles as drivers approach the entrance. there is also a sign out warning of flooding. traffic is running smoothly but there are also some wind gusts. there's a small craft advisory in effect which means that the winds could create some dangerous waves for boaters. there's also a chance of some isolated showers tomorrow and more rain on thursday. now, drivers when the roads are wet like this always play it safe. again it will continue raining throughout the morning commute. so go slow. be alert. and leave some room between you and the vehicle this is front of you. reporting live at the bay bridge, elissa harrington, cbs 5. and speaking of the wet weather, how is the rain impacting the morning commute? >> well, usually we ask you. >> right. >> but this morning it's gianna. how are you? >> you know, it's getting busy out there. there's a couple of things to

look out for. live look at conditions along 580 as you work your way westbound towards pleasanton. slick surfaces. we have reports of a big rig on fire briefly. they were able to put it out quickly. it's over to the right shoulder westbound 580 at san are moan boulevard. so you might find some activity there. may slow you down just a bit. jumping to our maps right now we're seeing green on our sensors, traffic okay there. highway 121 silverado trail shut down between stonecrest drive and hagen road. that's due to an accident that may have hit a power pole. there are lines down in the road so lots of activity. in the meantime use [ indiscernible ] for alternates. elsewhere, no accidents to report in marin county. so far, so good as you work your way into san francisco.

here's a live look at conditions. so far traffic very light heading toward the toll plaza, no delays up the incline and clear across the upper deck into san francisco. no delays on the lower deck heading out of san francisco into oakland. a couple of accidents, westbound 580 at san ramon boulevard, we have a wreck big rig involved at one point it was on fire. they got it out quickly but they are going to need a big rig tow to get it out of the road so they may shut down a lane to do that. but as of now lanes are open. all activity off to the seed and green there. so not causing too many delays as of yet. in fact, as you work your way out of the altamont pass only 15 minutes now westbound 580 to 680 so so far traffic is moving okay in both directions. a little sluggish on the eastbound side through livermore. we have been monitoring this trouble spot in napa. highway 121 silverado trail is closed between stonecrest and hagen due to downed power lines. lots of activity. they are expected to open things hopefully by 7:00. so still almost about two more hours on that closure. everything else though fairly quiet. we just checked in with chp a

few minutes ago. those two accidents along 580 in napa, other than that things looking good. that's the golden gate bridge into san francisco. 880 has been an okay ride this morning outside of some wet roads. we are not seeing any troubles or delays along 880. 237 westbound same story between 880 and the 101 about a six-minute ride and, of course, if you want to avoid any of the wet weather you can as you use mass transit. bart, ace, muni, caltrain and your ferries, everything running on time right now and a quick check of the south bay. a live look at our sensors here northbound 101 still look good through san jose as well as 280. but again, all that wet roadway -- or those wet roads causing problems. >> a little slick out there this morning to begin with. things will improve toward the afternoon. but right now a lot of low- level moisture moving onshore so you're seeing drizzle and light showers continuing scattered about the bay area right now. you can see in our latest doppler radar images you can see the scattered showers popping up all around from the north bay to the south bay and the central bay you name it

scattered showers continuing. taking you to a closer look some of the rainfall continuing toward milpitas. this afternoon, maybe beginning to see things break up a little bit. out the door right now, showers, breezy, winds to 17 miles per hour in fairfield. temperatures not bad 50s for the most part. this afternoon, slight chance of a widely scattered shower. but we'll be drying things out in the afternoon. we'll see some sunshine in between the clouds. and temperatures in the 50s, maybe even some low 60s. but another cold system in the bay area. clouds on the back side, the air will sweep into the bay area the next couple of days. we have some very chilly nights coming in our direction. all right. here we go. you've got some scattered showers and the latest forecast models spreading through the bay area. by the afternoon things begin to break up and then it looks like we'll start to slowly clear things out a little toward the afternoon hours and dry out. so as skies clear out that cold air is in place. it's going to be chilly tonight. traveling out of sfo could be delays due to early showers.

in november. he allegedly handed the teller a note saying he was armed. investigators used video to identify him and matched his fingerprints with the ones on the note. and three people are in custody in connection with the murder of two teenaged girls in east oakland. according to investigators, the two adults and juvenile were arrested after one made admissions connect the trio to the murders. -year-old bobby sartain and raquel gerstel were killed. a man in indiana is facing serious charges after he allegedly threatened to kill people at an elementary school near his home. police found 47 guns and about $100,000 worth of ammunition. inside the cedar lake home of von meyer. he now faces charges of felony intimidation. two police officers are dead and the search for their killer is under way in topeka, kansas. the officers were responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle when they were shot

yesterday outside a grocery store. investigators say they are looking for a 22-year-old man, although they have not revealed the suspect's name or a possible motive. in the nation's capital this morning, there are signs that we may not step off the dreaded "fiscal cliff." sources say a new proposal from republican house speaker john boehner includes tax hikes on people making more than a million dollars a year. boehner was previously opposed to any tax hikes on the wealthy. president obama and congressional democrats have been calling for higher taxes on those making at least a quarter of a million dollars. chevron says it is installing a different kind of piping at its richmond refinery that should prevent fires like the one back in august. according to the "san francisco chronicle," the piping is made to resist the type of corrosion that's believed to have caused that recent fire. official tests to determine the cause of the fire are not yet complete. thursday, state regulators are expected to approve a plan

that pg&e says will improve its pipeline safety. the "san francisco examiner" says the plan includes replacement of 185 miles of pipeline segments and automating more than 200 valves. that plan comes two years a pg&e pipeline explode killing 8 people in san bruno. the pain at the pump is easing as gas prices continue to fall. aaa says the statewide average price for a gavel regular is now $3.57. that doesn't sound cheap but at least it's down 24 cents a gallon from mid-november. the highest average price in the bay area is in san francisco at 3.62. that's down 30 cents from a month ago. oakland checks in at 3.51 as does san jose. time now 20 minutes after 5:00. whose defense played better on sunday, the 49ers or the raiders? >> did you catch the game? >> no. >> i did actually. what's going on, i did! >> plus, the buffalo bills have a big week.

san francisco. a home invasion robbery this morning in the sunset district. police were called to the 1600 block of sloat boulevard at about 3 a.m. they found a family tied up inside their three-story house. the victims weren't hurt but they had been robbed. police say the suspects are three males. investigators are still on the scene at this hour. and we're talking rai and it's about to get colder and more wet. let's check in with meteorologist lawrence karnow. >> it's been chilly. we have cold storms out of the gulf of alaska and, of course, that keeps our temperatures very cold. i think we have some very cold air headed our way. this morning, we are starting out with some scattered showers early on. kind of some nuisance raindrops, not real heavy but we are seeing scattered showers continuing throughout much of the bay area. kind of hit and miss. you can see the speckled green out there as we are seeing light scattered showers and heavy drizzle. it's enough to make it slick if you are traveling outside this

morning so be careful. behind this though you have all that cold speckled cloud cover that's going to be pushing into the bay area. that's some cold air dropping in our direction so we are going to keep things unsettled and wet. more storms lining up. outside over the bay cloudy skies some light showers there, temperatures in the 50s. storms brewing and more to come of the we feel talk more about that in a moment. first we go to elissa harrington our reporter out there in the elements on the bay bridge. >> reporter: just about five minutes ago we were getting pounded by the rain. right now, just drizzling. so these showers have really been on and off throughout the morning but behind me, drivers are splashing around as they head on to the bay bridge an as they approach, there is a sign warning of flooding and some very large pulledles directly past the toll plaza. so be aware of that if you are take be the bay bridge this morning. it is expected to rain throughout the morning commute. there's some wind gusts and a

aides worked through the weekend after house speaker john boehner offered a new proposal to the president on friday. the proposal includes an increase in taxes on people making more than $1 million a year and in exchange he is asking for one trillion dollars in spending cuts. and diet pepsi is getting a huge makeover next month but the company is already making changes. they have added a new sweetener. diet pepsi contains aspartame which breaks down in heat so they are using a new mix to help it last on shelves longer. it hits stores this month. i have always been coca-cola but i'll give it a try live on the edge. >> did you say they are not supposed to change t taste? >> it's supposed to stay sweeter longer. i have always thought pepsi had a bitter after taste. so maybe they will change that. >> a little sweeter than coke. okay. for other stories we are

tracking the system as it pushes through. you can see the scattered showers just enough to get roads wet this morning if you are heading out so be careful. we are look at scattered showers continuing right in toward the east bay toward danville and walnut creek. showers along the 680 corridor. watch out for that. more scattered showers toward orinda and more showers on and off throughout the morning but by the afternoon i think we catch a little bit of a break. but this morning a little breezy in spots too. winds gusting to 17 miles per hour. temperatures into the 50s. this afternoon, a chance of showers but really becoming more widely scattered outside. temperatures going to be cool though in the 50s, maybe some low 60s and then it looks like maybe we catch a break in the stormy weather. cold front is going to pass through a little later on but a fairly dry cold front moving by but behind that, we have all that cold air. i think it's going to make for a frosty night the next couple of nights. latest computer models shows you showers scooting through this morning. by the afternoon they begin to taper off. clearing out on the back side and then that sweeps by and skies clearing out for tonight to make for a very cold night

tonight into tomorrow morning. traveling out of sfo we may see some delays today. watch out for that. temperatures into the 50s. across the country so far not too bad into houston 73 degrees there. 48 expected in denver, 45 chicago, maybe problems with rain in new york. temperatures expected to be in the 50s, maybe some low 60s here. next couple of days going to settle down but rain returns toward thursday, staying unsettled and wet right into the weekend. gianna? >> all right, lawrence. thank you very much. let's jump over to the roads right now. we have a couple of new trouble spots to report. in fact, two separate accidents in the same area. northbound 101 right at mathilda as you work your way into sunnyvale, chp reports two separate accidents with injuries. they have called out fire crews, emergency crews to the scene, as well. so that looks like two lanes are blocked there until further notice. that's north 101 at mathilda avenue as you head into sunnyvale. so we're seeing a backup there according to our sensors. speeds dipping under 40 miles per hour as you head in and around that area so give

yourself some extra time through there. elsewhere 237 connector as you work your way through 880 and 101 so far, so good not showing problems. elsewhere look at that 101 in the south bay starting to see delays 15 minutes that yellow there indicating that. 280 looking good as well at guadalupe parkway. now we have reports of mud in the road southbound 101 just before you approach the bridge. it is over in the right lane. so that may slow you down a bit. on the bridge that's okay. a bit of abackup on the bay bridge, no metering lights, slow-and-go in the cash lanes. back to you guys. >> thank you. we now have the name of the chp officer killed in a crash while riding his personal motorcycle in solano county. the chp says 38-year-old john [ indiscernible ] died after his motorcycle clipped a pickup truck on highway 12 near fairfield that happened on friday. the impact knocked him off the motorcycle.
